6/25/2023 0 Comments A Lucky Man by Jamel BrinkleyIn several stories, race and gender are shown to be largely performative. The relationships that matter here – those that define Brinkley’s characters, as often as not by their absence – are predominantly paternal and fraternal. Indeed, it’s the question of what it takes to be a man – an American man of colour, specifically – that provides the book’s theme, and though women flit through its pages in various roles, they occupy another realm entirely. They aren’t all men, either for every fedora-doffing dandy and greying has-been there’s a lost boy or an adolescent whose desire feels a lot like fury. Precarious, haunted, wise too long after the event – all seem more apt descriptions as they share their magnetic tales of abandonment and flight, and of wild nights that demand to be followed to their dawn-streaked ends. T he “lucky” men in Jamel Brinkley’s mighty debut short story collection do not initially appear blessed.

6/25/2023 0 Comments Daniel derondaIt was his characteristic bias to shrink from the moral stupidity of valuing lightly what had come dose to him, and of missing blindly in his own life of to-day the crises which he recognised as momentous and sacred in the historic life of men. The consciousness that he was half dominated by Mordecai's energetic certitude, and still more by his fervent trust, roused his alarm. To a young man of much duller susceptibilities the adventure might have seemed enough out of the common way to divide his thoughts but it had stirred Deronda so deeply, that with the usual reaction of his intellect he began to examine the grounds of his emotion, and consider how far he must resist its guidance. Imagine the conflict in a mind like Deronda's, given not only to feel strongly but to question actively, on the evening after that interview with Mordecai."It is a part of probability that many improbable things will happen."' - ARISTOTLE: Poetics. 'This, too, is probable, according to that saying of Agathon: George Eliot, DANIEL DERONDA (6) GEORGE ELIOT DANIEL DERONDA (1876) BOOK SIX: REVELATIONS (CHAPTERS XLI-XLIX) 6/25/2023 0 Comments S by jj abrams amazonThey are a way to reach out to each other, to talk about hard things through the intermediary of an author's words. Isn't this the pleasure of reading? Dorst and Abrams are saying that books are a way to talk about life, to think about life. He reveals that he wrote that note right before he was hospitalized for mental-health issues. As most beautiful things eventually are.'"Įric has underlined that passage and written a sour little note about it, prompting a question in the margins from Jen. asks Stenfalk whether his family still has the book. Love how strong it is in the south stacks." Jen has underlined the passage about the "musty pages" and, off to the side, written in her neat cursive, "I've always loved this smell." Eric responds, "Me, too. When he opened it, you could smell the musty pages from across the room - but it was full of the most wonderful stories." Passed down in my family for generations. Interesting as that may be it doesn’t explain why Thomas and his wife are chiselled as top knotted bundles. The screen in the church was given by the Beresfords in the aftermath of the Wars of the Roses – presumably in grateful thanks for surviving. Having said that John Beresford managed to get on the wrong side of Henry IV when he refused to go to France. This is perhaps not unexpected as the Beresfords are listed as part of the Lancaster Affinity. The Beresfords provided a troop of horsemen for Henry V and Thomas’s sons took part in the Wars of the Roses fighting on the side of Lancaster. Their tomb tells us quite a bit about the couple – they had sixteen sons and five daughters – all of them in their shrouds, as indeed are Thomas and Agnes. They were buried in St Edmund’s Church, Fenny Bentley opposite their home in Fenny Bentley Old Hall. Thomas Beresford died some ten years after his wife, Agnes. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Flights of fancy by jen turanoShe describes her high school times being fabulous as she would roam the halls with her “gang of eight lovely girls” all of who are still friends today. Specifically, Klion says audiences will love the show's puppet sequences - MYT will use puppets to act out Maria's conscience - and adds that the play starts most days at 2 p.m. The play is "a real but approachable look at something very real." "This notion of old versus new is something that a lot of families experience firsthand today," she says, noting that the play was adapted for the stage by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts in Los Angeles. The show itself is a playful tale: A girl named Maria tries on her mother's wedding ring while making tamales for a Christmas party, and panic ensues when, hours later, she realizes the ring is missing and enlists her cousins to eat through dozens of tamales to find the ring.Įmily Klion, the show's producer and director of the MYT program, says "Too Many Tamales" also deals with the clash of holiday traditions from Mexico (such as making and eating tamales) and Americanized ones - an issue for some Mexican Americans. Of equal importance to families interested in attending: There will be actual tamales (from Mis Antojitos, a Mexican restaurant on 22nd and Harrison streets) for sale after each show. That’s not entirely unusual for a mystery, where often the plot is more the point than any sort of in-depth character study or development. The characterizations are also incredibly flat. Overall, however, I think Peterfreund could have just told this story without making it a “CLUE story,” so it didn’t really work for me as something inspired by the board game. “Plum,” for instance, is one of the top students at the school, and Mustard just transferred from a military school. Peterfreund then tries to give her characters some of the personality traits of the original board game characters, but it all comes across as a faint flavoring rather than a convincing adaptation. Peacock and Mustard, in particularly, get ribbed on for having absurd names. Some are actually the character’s names while others are nicknames, but even the characters themselves think it’s a bit ridiculous. First, many of the character names are a stretch. The CLUE connection is itself tenuous, and it feels as if Peterfreund is trying to force allusions rather than having them naturally occur in the book. A YA mystery inspired by the CLUE board game sounds like fun, but ultimately In the Hall with the Knife was bland and predictable, and I will not be continuing with the series. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Franca by CollectifsThe National Federation of Victims of Terrorist Attacks and Mas-Casualty Accidents (Fenvac - Fédération National des Victimes d’Attentats et d’Accidents Collectifs) is an NGO comprised exclusively of victims of terrorist acts and mass casualty accidents and their loved ones.įounded in 1994, Fenvac encompasses more than 80 organizations and brings together victims from over 130 incidents, including a number of terrorist attacks in France and abroad (the Mont-Blanc tunnel fire, the crash of the Air France 447 Rio-Paris flight, the sinking of the Costa Concordia, the terrorist attacks in Paris, Saint-Denis and Nice, the crash of flight MS 804 from Paris to Cairo, the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, etc.).
